Temporary Dome Gets New Cover

On Saturday May 24, a group of volunteers including members of the Board of RBF Dome and a few local supporters met to create and install a new cover for the temporary dome that is protecting the Fuller Dome Home (FDH). When we first erected the temporary protective dome (TPD) we covered it with "5-year" greenhouse plastic. And it held up fairly well for 7 years. But recent storms have ripped the plastic covering leaving the FDH exposed to the exceptionally wet spring that is at hand here in Southern Illinois.
With the permission of Master Black of
Black's Martial Arts, we utilized the gymnasium at the old Carbondale high school to tape together 12' wide strips of industrial plastic to create a 84' X 75' plastic sheet. We then hauled the plastic (weighing approximately 300 lbs.) to the FDH with the help of a trailer supplied by
Weatherford Design Group. We took a short lunch break and then proceeded to haul the plastic over the top of the dome and down the other side.
Thanks to those that participated: Mary O'Hara, Judy Ashby, Bill Perk, Brian Gorecki, Tom Redmond, Larry Weatherford and Cornelius Crane. Special thanks go out to Evan (who always comes to volunteer when we have large projects) and Christopher who documented the process with camera and video (look for more images in the photo gallery soon).
