Carbondale
In 1959, Delyte Morris, then President of Southern Illinois University (SIU), invited Bucky to move to Carbondale to be part of a plan to help to elevate SIU to new heights of educational awareness and excellence. Bucky and his wife Anne moved to Carbondale, IL. SIU thrived under Delyte Morris, and Bucky's association brought international recognition for visionary thinking. On April 20, 1960 a local contractor put together the pieces of an unusual structure based on the Buckminster Fuller patent of a geodesic dome for Bucky and Anne to live in.
Bucky was having an effect on Carbondale and soon the world. During his time in Carbondale he wrote and published many of his books. He developed the concept of World Game and was commissioned to design the United States Pavilion at the Montreal Expo '67. In 1969 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. It is interesting to note that Bucky was 64 years old when he moved to Carbondale. His time at SIU was his most prolific. He spoke to more audiences than at any other time in his life and was recognized as coming from SIU in Carbondale, Illinois.
