Bucky's Work, Applied

In 1954, Bucky was granted a patent for his Geodesic Dome design. Since the first prototypes were developed in the late 1950's, hundreds of thousands of geodesic domes have been built all around the world. Another of his monumental achievements was the development of the Dymaxion Map, a projection of the Earth's surface that shows the least amount of distortion compared to other cartological projections. He really wanted humans to tactically experience their spherical spaceship called Earth including a non-distorted view of the Earth as a planet and its core systemic functioning. A few years after his death in 1983, scientists discovered a carbon molecule in the shape of his geodesic dome and named it the buckminsterfullerene. Fullerenes or "Buckyballs" are now one of the most highly researched molecules in all of science with applications in chemistry, textiles, medicine, and many other fields.
